Sanath Teran Jayasuriya


Sanath Teran Jayasuriya was born 30th June1969, in Matara. He is a Sri Lankan cricketer and member of the Sri Lankan cricket team since 1989.

He is one of the most fearsome strikers of the cricket ball. His aggressive style, coupled with consistency is what has distinguised him as one of the most feared batsmen in world cricket. Now in the twilight of his career, he still scores freely and spearheads the Sri Lankan batting at the top of the order.

He was named as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1997 and served as captain of the Sri Lankan team in 28 Test matches from 1999 to 2003. He is a very useful all-rounder with a good batting average in both Test cricket and One-day Internationals, an excellent batting strike rate in One-day Internationals.

Jayasuriya holds the record for the highest Test score made by a Sri Lankan, 340 against India in 1997.

On 31st March 2006, he announced that he would retire from Test cricket in April 2006, but he intends to continue to play one-day international cricket.
