Sania Mirza


Sania Mirza is the current youth icon in India. She was born on 15th November 1986 in Mumbai, India, resides in Hyderabad, India. She is a professional female tennis player from India.

She is the first Indian to get into Top 50 WTA Ranking. Sania Mirza is the first Indian woman to win a WTA (Hyderabad Open trophy) in February 2005.

Sania Mirza has got a huge fan following, both inside and outside the country. Having trained under C.G.Krishna Bhupathi. Sania's ambition is to one day become one among the top-20 in the world.

She began playing tennis at age six. She turned professional in 2003. She is a devout Muslim, who began playing tennis at the age of six.

Sania won the Wimbledon Championships Girls' Doubles title in 2003, teaming up with Alisa Kleybanova of Russia. She got a wild card entry to the 2005 Australian Open and created history by becoming the first Indian woman to enter the third round of a Grand Slam tournament. She lost in the 3rd round to eventual champion Serena Williams.

Sania Mirza has also been honoured with the prestigious Arjuna awards by the Indian government for the year 2004.
